Day 18: Jeremiah 17:1-27
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who
can understand it? (Jeremiah 17:9, NIV).
There’s
a picture that I love that says “don’t follow your heart, follow the conviction
of the Holy Spirit. The heart is deceitfully wicked” In the best way to put it our heart is messy and it will leave you in a mess if you do not allow God to come in and mold it! The life
application study bible note for this verse says, “God makes it clear why we
sin—it’s a matter of the heart. Our hearts have been inclined toward sin from
the time we were born. It is easy to fall into the routine of forgetting and
forsaking God. But we can still choose whether or not to continue in sin. We
can yield to a specific temptation, or we can ask God to help us resist temptation
when it comes.” If we want to grow in our relationship with God, the change
must take place in the heart first. God isn’t looking at the outward appearance
or the deeds that we do but He is looking at the intentions of our hearts. When
He searches your heart and examines your mind are they revealed to be aligned
with Him? We must do daily heart checks and self-examinations to make sure that
we are living a life that is honoring God because it is so easy to get lost in
the busyness and craziness of life and completely push God to the side. He still
wants our entire hearts today and He wants to purify it and change it to reflect
His. Have you done a heart check today?
