Jeremiah 5

Day 6: Jeremiah 5:1-31

Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem, look around and consider, search through her squares. If you can find but one person who deals honestly and seeks the truth, I will forgive this city (Jeremiah 5:1, NIV).

What are you doing with the word of God? I’m sure you’re thinking that’s a pretty vague question but take a moment to think about it. What are you doing with the knowledge that you have received through the word of God? The Lord declares to Judah and Israel that they have eyes but do not see and they have ears but do not hear (v. 21). What good is it to hear the word of God only to dispose of it as if God doesn’t exist or if His word is not true? It’s easy to read the bible and it’s easy to attend church but what are we doing with the word that we have received? Are we making it applicable to our lives, are we sharing it with others, or are we receiving it and allowing it to remain dormant? The real heart check is are we obeying it? I’m not just talking about the things that are easy and comfortable to obey but also those areas that we’re not quite ready to fully submit to God. His wrath was being brought on Judah and Israel because of their lack of obedience and their stubborn and rebellious hearts (v 23). However, just as God told Abraham when He was ready to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah for their sin, He tells Jeremiah that if he can find just one person who is honest and seeking the truth then He will forgive the city (v .1). Just one…God will spare you from His wrath and ultimately eternal damnation if you just pursue Him wholeheartedly. He is still willing to spare you, to save you, if you are willing to walk upright before Him and pursue righteousness. At some point we have to make the choice to either continue down the path we’ve been on for so long or to finally allow God to take the reins in our life and completely submit to Him. He’s not asking for perfection but He is asking for obedience. Your obedience is what will set you free and make you whole in Him.
